JANUARY 2010 STUDENT OF THE MONTH

The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce and this month’s sponsor, Montgomery Bank, honored Kevin Dwyer of Thomas Jefferson School as the January 2010 Student of the Month.  Kevin received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a Chamber plaque.  Kevin is a senior at TJ, having been there since 7th grade.  He is a self-described “science nut” having logged in well over 250 hours at the St. Louis Science Center interacting with young people with various activities.  As a sophomore, Kevin attended the Missouri Engineering Camp at the University of Missouri - Columbia, and last summer he was selected for Operation Catapult at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.  He partnered with three other students from the U.S. and produced a computer network version of PAINT and the scientific paper and working model to go with it.  Kevin is also a charter member of the TJ Newtonian Physics Club.   Kevin’s scholastic achievements include a National Merit Honorable Mention and his current courseload of AP Chemistry, AP U.S. History, AP Calculus, AP English Literature/Composition.  He has been accepted at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and was awarded a scholarship to study mechanical engineering and physics.   At Thomas Jefferson Kevin is actively involved in the Student Activities Committee, Community Service Committee, Italian Film Club, Newtonian Physics Club.  He has acted in several school plays, served as stage manager, and directed an all-school play, member of the Set Tech class and participated in several Mock Trials.  On the athletic front, Keven has been a member of the JV Basketball Team and held the position of captain of both the Basketball Team and the Volleyball Team.   This spring he has volunteered to host the annual ethnic dinner at Thomas Jefferson.  He will present a talk about his Irish heritage and cook an Irish dinner for the community.  Congratulations Kevin!

The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce and this month’s sponsor, Heartland Bank,  honored Greg Butz of Lindbergh High School as the December 2009 Student of the Month.  Greg received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a Chamber plaque.  Greg is currently a senior at Lindbergh High School where he maintains a 4.22 GPA and ranks 44th in his class of 435 students.  His course work is challenging and includes three honors classes and two science classes.   Outside of academics, Greg is involved with several extracurricular activities.  He has been on the varsity soccer team for the past two years and serves as the captain this year.  Greg has also been a member of the varsity wrestling team and has been that team’s captain for the past two years.  Greg is a member of the National Honor Society, Character Council, and in his spare time works at Steak n’ Shake.  He loves chemistry, biology and math and plans to pursue a pharmacy degree, and in fact wants to take that to a doctorate level.  This shows the level of determination and maturity that Greg already possesses.  Greg’s teachers are tremendously impressed with his ability to balance a challenging scholastic schedule and his involvement in sports.  He is described as trustworthy, respectful, responsible, hard-working, fair, honest to a fault, and caring to all he comes in contact with.  Congratulations, Greg.   

November 2009 Student of the Month

The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce and this month’s sponsor, Dr. Mary Saale of Saale Chiropractic, honored Brittney Lehocky of South Technical High School as the November 2009 Student of the Month.  Brittney is a senior in South Tech’s Print Technology program.  She is very active and involved in many SkillsUSA professional development activities both at school and in the community.  She is currently a member of the SkillsUSA Leadership Team which helps plan and carry out such school activities as its Annual Canned Food Drive, UNICEF yearly donation event, and Achievement Days, an annual mentoring program in conjunction with the SSD CharacterPlus Program.  In addition to this, Brittney is the SkillsUSA East District Officer Parliamentarian for South Tech and participates at both the district and state levels of SkillsUSA Championships.  This past summer she helped set up and organize the yearly national championships held in Kansas City.  Balancing her involvement with SkillsUSA, Brittney is also very active in her church organization participating in the Thanksgiving Outreach Program as well as working with OASIS International, an organization that helps refugees get settled once they arrive in the U.S.  Brittney plans to attend college next fall and pursue a teaching career with a focus on music.    Brittney received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a Chamber plaque.  Congratulations, Brittney.   

OCTOBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH

The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce and this month’s sponsor, Sylvan Learning Center in Crestwood, honored Ian Ermatinger-Salas of Thomas Jefferson School as the October 2009 Student of the Month.  Ian received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a Chamber plaque.  Ian is a senior at Thomas Jefferson, in his sixth year as a boarding student, coming from Cape Girardeau, MO.  Ian knew Thomas Jefferson School well, as his sister Michelle graduated two years ago.  He arrived as a 7th grader and immediately became an asset to the school.  He has been a member of the Student Admission Assistants program for six years; founding member of the Mock Trial Club; worked at the Parent Association’s Book Fair fund raiser for four years; and for the past two years has been student coordinator for the Book Fair.  He always works TJ’s Trivia Night and is an active member of Student Council, including holding the position of Student Council President.  Ian recently joined the Green Club, coordinating recycling projects on campus.  Last year he was the treasurer of the Prom Committee.  For the past two years, he also found time to manage the Girls Varsity Basketball team.  Off campus, Ian has volunteeered at laumeier Sculpture Park, tutored immigrants at the St. Louis International Center, and racked up more than 300 volunteer hours in the Youth Services division of the Cape Girardeau Public Library.  He has been awarded the St. Louis County Youth Leadership Award, and attended the Rotary Youth Leadership training.  During his career at TJ, Ian has consistently held Honor grades and earned Cum Laude recognition on the National Latin exam.  This year’s courses include AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP English Composition, and AP Chemistry, and Set Design III.  Ian is the Director of this year’s All-School Play.  Ian is looking forward to entering the University of Pennsylvania next year.  Congratulations, Ian.

JoAnn Nussbaum - September 2009 Student of the Month

The Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsor Truman Bank honored JoAnn Nussbaum of Lindbergh High School as the September 2009 Student of the Month. JoAnn is a senior at Lindbergh High School where she maintains a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.44 and ranks 28th in her senior class of 435. JoAnn is currently enrolled in very challenging coursework including Calculus AP, Chemistry AP, German 5 and English Language AP. She is also very active in many extracurricular activities including playing on the Varsity Tennis Team since she was a sophomore. JoAnn participates in the A+ Program where she is required to tutor for a minimum of 50 hours — JoAnn has over 60 hours. In addition, JoAnn is involved in the Link Crew and is a Link Crew Leader. As “leader” she had to be nominated by a teacher, complete an application and interview process. Being “leader” requires a student is mature, responsible, and respectful as they are the mentors to the Freshman Class.
